4. Check and tighten fixings. Vibration works bolts loose over time. Retighten the operator mounts, brackets, and any rack fixings, and on sliding gates confirm the small, even gap between rack and pinion is still there along the travel.

5. Clean the photocell lenses and test the safety devices. Wipe the photocell lenses, confirm they still face each other squarely, and test every safety device by triggering it during motion to confirm the gate stops or reverses as it should. This is the most important task on the list, because a safety device that has drifted out of alignment or filmed over protects no one.

6. Check the battery and power. On DC and solar units, test the battery, and on solar systems confirm the panel is clean and unshaded. Confirm the supply and connections are sound and dry.

7. Follow the manufacturer's lubrication guidance. Lubricate only what the manual says to. Many rack-and-pinion systems are designed to run with little or no grease on the rack, because heavy grease collects grit and turns into a grinding paste, so do not add lubricant the manual does not call for.
