The operator moves the gate, but the access control decides who can make it move and how they get back out. Every access method answers the same question in a different way: how does the gate know this person is allowed in?

Remotes. A handheld transmitter and a receiver at the gate. Remotes suit regular, known users such as a household or staff who each carry one. Use rolling-code remotes rather than fixed-code, because rolling code changes the transmitted value each press and resists the code-grabbing that fixed-code systems are vulnerable to. The receiver either sits on the control board or wires into it, and it has to match the remotes' frequency.

Keypads. A wall or post-mounted keypad lets people enter a PIN instead of carrying a device. This is ideal for visitors, deliveries, or shared sites where handing out remotes is impractical, and it is why an automatic gate opener with a keypad and remote together is such a common residential setup: remotes for the family, a code for everyone else. Keypads come wired or wireless. Wireless is quick to fit and needs battery upkeep; wired is more reliable long term. RFID proximity readers. A reader at the gate and a card or fob for each user. Present the fob and the gate opens. This suits owners who want to let someone in while away, or sites that want a log of openings. Confirm how the unit connects, since WiFi range at a distant gate is a frequent weak point, and cellular or a dedicated bridge is sometimes needed.

Intercoms. An audio or video intercom lets a caller at the gate reach someone inside, who can then release the gate. This is the right tool where a person needs to vet callers, such as a home that wants to see deliveries or a site with a manned point. A wireless intercom simplifies installation where running cable to the gate is hard.

Do not forget the exit side

A gate that is easy to enter but awkward to leave is a common oversight. Vehicles inside need a reliable way out, and there are a few standard methods.

  • A free-exit loop detector. An inductive loop buried in the driveway detects a vehicle approaching from inside and opens the gate automatically, so drivers leave without touching anything. This is the usual choice for most sites.
  • An exit wand or probe. A sensor that detects a vehicle leaving, used where a loop is impractical.
  • An exit push button or keypad. A simple manual release from inside, for pedestrian gates or low-traffic sites.
  • A timer or schedule. Holds the gate open during set hours where that suits the site, common on commercial entrances during business hours.

Matching the exit method to the traffic matters as much as the entry method. A free-exit loop is worth the install on any site where vehicles come and go regularly.

Loop detectors do more than open the gate

Inductive loops are worth understanding because they do three jobs, not one. A loop is a coil of wire set into the ground that senses the metal mass of a vehicle over it.

  • Free exit: a loop inside the gate opens it for departing vehicles.
  • Safety and reversing: a loop under the gate's path stops the gate closing while a vehicle sits over it, preventing the gate from closing onto a car.
  • Presence: a loop holds the gate open while a vehicle is still in the opening, then allows it to close once clear.

On busier and commercial gates, loops are a core part of both convenience and safety, and their placement and tuning affect how smoothly traffic flows. They complement, rather than replace, the photocells and edges that protect people in the gate's path.

How access devices connect to the operator

The access layer only works if each device speaks to the control board correctly. Two connection types cover most of it.

Simple devices such as keypads, receivers, exit buttons, and loop detector outputs usually connect to the board through a dry contact, a switch closure that tells the operator to open. As long as the voltage and contact type match the board's input, these are straightforward to wire.

Readers in a managed access system often use the Wiegand interface to pass credentials to an access controller, which then decides whether to release the gate. This is where access-control integration comes in: the operator becomes one output of a larger system that also handles who is enrolled, when they are allowed, and what gets logged. When you are combining an operator with a separate access control system, confirm the two are compatible at that interface before you order, because a reader and controller that do not share a format will not talk.
