For a swing gate, the choice between underground and above ground operators comes down to appearance versus practicality. An underground gate operator is concealed in a foundation box at the hinge, so nothing is visible on the gate or pillar, which suits ornate, heritage, and design-led gates. An above-ground operator, whether an articulated arm or a linear ram, mounts on the pillar and gate where you can see it, and it is cheaper to install, easier to service, and far simpler to retrofit to an existing gate. Choose underground when the look of the gate matters and the budget and site allow it.

Concealed operators are the natural fit for decorative wrought iron, period properties, and any entrance where a visible arm or ram would spoil the design. They also help where the pillars are very wide or built in a way that leaves nowhere clean to mount an above-ground bracket, since the drive lives at the pivot rather than on the pillar face. On a new installation, where you can build the foundation box and drainage in from the start and hang the gate onto the operator, an underground system is at its most practical.

The trade-offs are real and worth stating plainly. Underground operators cost more, both for the unit and for the groundwork. The foundation box must be drained properly, because a box that fills with water is one of the main causes of underground operator failure, so a site prone to flooding or with a high water table needs careful drainage or points you back toward above-ground. And when service is needed, reaching an operator below ground is more involved than unbolting an arm.

When an above-ground operator is the better call

For most gates, above-ground is the sensible default.

It costs less, installs faster, and is the obvious choice for retrofitting an operator to a gate that is already hung, because it bolts on without lifting the gate or digging a foundation box. Servicing is simple, since the operator and its wiring are all in reach. Between the two above-ground styles, articulated arm operators suit wide pillars and larger hinge setbacks, while linear rams suit narrower pillars and depend closely on their mounting dimensions.   1. Is the gate already installed, and are you retrofitting an operator? If yes, lean above-ground.
  2. Does the appearance of the gate rule out a visible arm or ram? If yes, underground earns its cost.
  3. Is the site prone to flooding or high groundwater? If yes, underground drainage is a risk, so favour above-ground unless drainage can be solved.
  4. Is budget tight? Above-ground costs less overall.
  5. Is this a new gate where you can build in a foundation box and drainage from the start? If yes, underground becomes much more practical.
